Beyond These Stars is designed around pointer-driven city management. The current Steam listing includes a Mouse Only Option but does not list full controller support among the product features. A controller can still emulate mouse and keyboard through Steam Input, especially on Steam Deck, but players should not expect a fully native gamepad interface or consistently matching button glyphs.
Use mouse-first controls on Windows
A mouse gives the most direct control over building footprints, road tiles, overlays, technology nodes, tooltips, and resource filters. The store’s Mouse Only Option indicates that timed keyboard combinations are not required for basic play. Keep the keyboard available for camera, pause, zoom, or shortcuts you confirm in the current settings.
Before changing bindings, play one work-and-break cycle and note the actions you repeat: select, cancel or close, pause, adjust speed if available, pan, zoom, rotate a placement if available, and switch views. Bind only actions shown by the live game. Do not assume familiar city-builder keys are identical.
Adjust camera comfort, text size, contrast, and volume at the same time. A control layout is only successful if the information under the pointer remains readable.
What the Steam Deck rating reveals
Valve rates the game Playable. Its test data reports that some functionality can require touchscreen, virtual keyboard, or a community configuration, that some prompts show mouse/keyboard or non-Deck icons, and that text can be small. It also reports successful SteamOS operation and acceptable default performance.
Pointer
Map the right trackpad or a stick to mouse movement; trackpad precision usually suits dense building placement better.
Primary action
Use a trigger or comfortable trackpad click for select/place and another input for cancel or context behavior.
Keyboard actions
Assign pause, menu, zoom, or camera keys only after confirming their current in-game bindings.
Text
Keep the Steam keyboard shortcut available because text fields may not invoke it automatically.
The Playable badge is not evidence of native full-controller support. It means Valve found a workable Deck experience with listed caveats.
Build a Steam Input layout safely
Start from a mouse-and-keyboard template. Map cursor and clicks first, then one navigation action at a time. Test building placement, a tooltip, a storage filter, Technology Tree navigation, Galaxy Map selection, and a save field. These screens catch missing inputs better than walking through the opening alone.
Use mode shifts or radial menus only after the base layout works. Overloaded layers are hard to remember and can cause accidental demolition or placement. Put dangerous actions behind a deliberate chord or leave them on a virtual menu.
Community layouts can save time, but verify their publication date and inspect the commands. A profile made for the Demo AppID, the Playtest, or a prerelease build may not match the released base game. Save your modified layout under a clear name before testing another.
Troubleshoot a controller on desktop
If a gamepad appears inactive, first confirm Steam Input is enabled for the base game AppID 2295060 and that the active layout contains mouse/keyboard bindings. Test the pointer in a menu. If the game displays keyboard glyphs, that is consistent with the current compatibility warning and does not necessarily mean the emulated action failed.
For a couch setup, keep a physical mouse nearby until you have verified every screen. Text entry may still need the Steam overlay keyboard. If another launcher or remapping utility is active, remove one layer at a time to avoid double input.
Do not claim a specific Xbox, PlayStation, or generic controller has official native support unless the live store adds that feature. Steam Input can make many devices usable by emulation, but that is a platform capability rather than a game promise.
Keep a tested action checklist
After mapping, confirm:
- Select, place, cancel, and close work without double input.
- Camera pan and zoom remain controllable at several speeds.
- You can pause before a dangerous placement or demolition.
- Storage filters, building priorities, overlays, and technology nodes are reachable.
- Galaxy and System views can be navigated precisely.
- Save naming or other text entry works with the on-screen keyboard.
Recheck the layout after a major update. For Deck-specific display and Proton guidance, see Steam Deck Guide. For PC hardware scope, see System Requirements.
