Strikes, sickness, and death are connected warning stages in Beyond These Stars, not random punishments to solve with more factories. Low Happiness can interrupt work, while low Energy raises sickness risk at the start of a shift. Sick Peeps stay home, and prolonged sickness or a severe tired-work mistake can lead to death and community-wide mourning.
Recognize the failure chain early
Peeps spend Happiness and Energy during work and restore them between shifts. They return to their own home to eat and drink, then relax. A settlement can show food in global storage while individual homes remain undersupplied, so inspect affected Peeps and accommodations rather than trusting one total.
Sickness is checked around the beginning of a shift, with lower Energy creating greater risk according to the developer’s behavior preview. A sick worker remains home, reducing the labor available to every priority tier. That absence can starve the very food, storage, or service line needed for recovery, so the safest response is to pause optional jobs.
Pollution makes both Kewa and Peeps worse off. Check the overlay when several residents decline together, especially near power and smelting. A Cleaner, forests, paused polluters, and restored by-product flow can be more valuable than another house or decoration.
Prevent strikes by fixing causes
A strike means the workforce’s wellbeing has already become an operational problem. Do not answer it by opening additional workplaces. Read the current warning or goal, identify whether the pressure is housing, recovery, pollution, food, or another unmet need, and direct the surviving labor toward that root cause.
Food and drink
Keep a basic supply moving into homes; higher-value options improve recovery, but dependable simple provisions come first.
Rest
Leave enough break time and local access for residents to eat, drink, relax, and visit helpful services or decorations.
Workload
Close optional job slots so essential work is staffed without spreading the population across too many buildings.
Environment
Separate homes from heavy pollution and prevent toxic areas instead of treating unhappiness as an isolated number.
Decorations can speed Happiness recovery, but they cannot replace accommodation, provisions, Energy, or a healthy environment. Build them into a working neighborhood rather than using them to disguise a broken supply loop.
Treat sickness and protect the workforce
When the Apothecary becomes available, use it as part of prevention and recovery. The developer describes its products as extra-Energy aids that Peeps keep at home for when they are needed. That means the item still has to be produced and delivered; an understaffed Apothecary or unreachable home is not protection.
Keep critical services near enough to homes and watch whether the chain receives inputs. If multiple Peeps are sick, temporarily narrow the economy to water, food, medicine, storage, power needed for those chains, and pollution control. Let buffers rebuild before resuming every industry.
Do not quote an exact universal sickness percentage or timer from an old guide as if it were stable. The reliable decision rule is visible condition: a low-Energy Peep is at higher risk, and a sick Peep is already unavailable for normal work.
Respond to death and mourning
Death is not just the loss of one worker. The developer notes that the community loses Happiness and may enter a mourning period, with residents gathering outside the deceased Peep’s home. The Memorial Statue provides a place to pay respects, and a break-time visit grants an immediate Happiness benefit.
After a death, avoid demolishing or redesigning the affected neighborhood immediately. Preserve routes, stabilize provisions, and allow the mourning behavior to resolve. Recount workers before restarting paused production because the settlement now has fewer available assignments.
Then correct the original cause. If it was exhaustion, improve meal and drink quality, reduce excessive jobs, and shorten the practical home-service loop. If sickness lingered, make Apothecary supply dependable. If a workplace was dangerous amid pollution, stop or relocate the polluter and strengthen cleanup.
A one-cycle emergency plan
Pause the game, then work through this order:
- Inspect several affected Peeps and their homes for Happiness, Energy, food, and drink.
- Pause surplus, export, decoration-construction, and speculative production jobs.
- Raise priority on the smallest complete recovery loop, including its storage and power needs.
- Check pollution and output storage around active industry.
- Resume and observe one complete work-and-break cycle before making another expansion.
If recovery bars rise and sick residents remain home, the plan is working even before total output returns. For the underlying break mechanics, see Happiness and Energy. For staffing coverage, use Jobs and Work Radius.
