Beyond These Stars asks you to build a working settlement on Kewa, a sentient Space Whale, while keeping both the Peeps and their host healthy enough to continue a journey across the galaxy. The easiest way to learn it is not to chase every unlocked building. Establish one dependable home-and-work loop, watch where resources stop moving, and only then add industry, research, or a distant outpost. This hub points you toward the task that is actually blocking your settlement.

Current scope: these guides cover the released Steam base game, AppID 2295060, at public version 1.0 after Hotfix #2. Demo and Playtest behavior is not treated as proof of how the full game works.

New settlement

Your first stable loop

Start with housing, water, food, roads, and reachable jobs. Delay an impressive factory if the Peeps cannot complete a work-and-break cycle without running short.

Follow the beginner route

Residents

Peeps are tired or unhappy

Check what reaches each home, whether the break restores Energy and Happiness, and whether a workplace is inside the home's work radius.

Diagnose Peep needs

Living world

Kewa's condition is falling

Read biome health, forest coverage, pollution, temperature, and conversation choices as connected parts of your relationship with Kewa.

Care for Kewa

Production

A chain has stopped

Trace the input, worker, power, output storage, and by-product path in that order. A full waste slot can stop useful output even when raw material is abundant.

Construction

A building will not operate

Confirm road access, breathable placement, workers, required power, inputs, and an available output destination before rebuilding the district.

Check building roles

Expansion

You are ready to leave Kewa

Use the Galaxy Map and System View deliberately, scout first, and make every outpost solve a named resource or logistics need.

Plan an outpost

Stabilize before you specialize

A settlement is stable when essential work keeps running through several shared work-and-break cycles, not merely when the stock counter is positive for a moment. Peeps return home to eat, drink, and relax between shifts. Their homes also determine which workplaces they can take. A production building on the far side of the settlement can therefore appear fully supplied yet remain idle because no resident can accept its jobs.

Use the first cycles to watch movement instead of accelerating construction. Confirm that water and food reach homes, home slots exist for the residents you expect to work, and the essential workplaces stay staffed. When one resource begins to decline, follow the chain backward. Check the consuming building, its storage, the producer, the producer’s inputs, and the route between them. This is faster than placing a second copy of every building.

Early expansion should have a purpose. Add housing to create a reachable workforce, storage to keep a specific flow moving, or production to satisfy a known shortage. Building because an icon has just unlocked can consume workers and construction materials that were holding the basic loop together.

Power and pollution deserve special attention because they cross normal production boundaries. Power moves through touching powered buildings and later through Power Lines; Peeps do not carry it. Pollution accumulates around working industry, reduces Kewa’s wellbeing, and can make Peeps unhappy or sick. A compact industrial block may shorten hauling but create a concentrated environmental problem. Leave room for forests, cleaning, roads, and future connections rather than filling every open tile.

Decide what to build next

Before placing a new building, name its job in one sentence: “This Ore Smelter will turn the nearby mine’s output into the iron needed by the Toolsmith,” or “This storage will pull soot out of the generator so power can continue.” Then check that the new building has workers, required inputs, power if needed, road access, and somewhere for every output to go.

If you cannot complete that sentence, wait one cycle. The technology tree progresses through constructing and using earlier buildings, so the next useful unlock often comes from making an existing chain work rather than spreading into several incomplete branches. Clicking a locked node shows the prerequisite path; use that path to set a concrete production goal.

Treat adjacency as a design layer, not a reason to freeze the whole settlement. Some neighbors improve production, storage, happiness, or pollution behavior, while others impose penalties. Reserve flexible space around important early buildings, inspect the displayed effect before confirming placement, and move or rebuild only when the benefit is worth interrupting a working chain.

Prepare for travel without abandoning the home loop

The Galaxy Map represents large-scale travel; the System View is where scout, trade, and settlement ships interact with local points of interest and habitable worlds. Kewa uses Energy to travel and may choose a detour to eat. Your plan therefore needs slack: essential supplies on Kewa, enough repair capacity for disruption, and outposts that can function when the route is not instantly available.

Scout before committing settlers. A viable outpost needs breathable land or a plan to create it, water and food, reachable jobs, construction resources, and a way to move its valuable output. Start with one purpose-built settlement rather than attempting to reproduce every building on Kewa. When a planet provides a resource unavailable at home, build the smallest reliable chain that extracts or produces it, then connect that chain to interplanetary transport.

Know which facts may change

Beyond These Stars reached 1.0 on October 16, 2026. Hotfix #1 changed a building-move edge case and corrected which range line appears for a selected Power Generator; Hotfix #2 addressed particles, the New Game tutorial checkbox, and another building-move case. Those fixes show why interface details and edge cases should be checked against the current client even when the underlying system is established.

The Steam base game lists a native Windows release. Steam Deck is rated Playable rather than Verified, and compatibility details can change after a client or game update. Use the Tech hub for current platform boundaries, and use Updates before relying on an old workaround or exact menu behavior.
