The galaxy in Beyond These Stars is both a travel map and a production network. Kewa carries the main settlement between large-scale destinations; System View exposes stars, events, fields, objects, and planets within the current location; ships investigate, trade, or establish settlements. Travel is most reliable when the Kewa city is already stable and every proposed outpost solves a resource or story need you can name.
Distinguish the three scales
The settlement view handles homes, roads, Buildings, Resources, and the biome on Kewa or a planet. System View shows what exists around the current star or location and lets ships interact with nearby targets. The Galaxy Map shows the wider network of sectors and nodes known to Kewa and the Peeps.
Do not issue a large commitment from the wrong layer. Use the Galaxy Map to choose a route, System View to inspect and dispatch, and the settlement view to prove that the destination can support Peeps. A planet icon is an opportunity, not confirmation that you have the supplies, ship, or local needs loop to use it safely.
Galaxy Map
Shows: sectors, stars, debris and static fields, discoveries, events, and other points of interest.
Decision: where to ask Kewa to travel and what route risk or Energy cost is acceptable.
System View
Shows: the current star system or location and its local objects.
Decision: whether to scout, trade, interact with an event, or send settlers.
Settlement View
Shows: the actual economy on Kewa or a settled world.
Decision: how to provide breathable land, homes, needs, labor, Power, production, storage, and export.
Read a route before requesting travel
Kewa spends Energy to travel, with longer journeys costing more. Kewa restores that Energy by eating and may pass through debris fields or visit asteroid belts. A travel request can therefore include a detour based on Kewa’s needs. Finish fragile construction, stock repair materials, and clear essential outputs before asking for a long move.
Temperature matters at the destination. Developer guidance states that remaining too long in a hot part of the galaxy can reduce Kewa’s Happiness and may trigger emergency travel to cool down. Treat hot systems as limited-duration stops: scout, complete the necessary local objective, and avoid starting work that requires Kewa to remain indefinitely.
Use a save before an unfamiliar route or major story node. The map reveals more as the journey continues, so a distant icon may lack the context needed for a permanent settlement decision. Exploration is valuable, but it should not strand a half-built supply chain at home.
Match each ship to one question
Scout spaceships investigate points of interest and reduce the uncertainty of a destination. Trade spaceships interact with trade opportunities. Settlement spaceships establish a Peep presence on a habitable world. A clean sequence is scout, inspect, decide, then commit the correct ship.
Do not use a settlement ship as a substitute for scouting. A habitable planet may still have terrain, temperature, or resource constraints that change the build order. The official developer material describes settleable worlds as sources of resources unavailable on Kewa, but the value of an outpost depends on turning that difference into a reliable flow.
Build outposts as focused economies
Begin with the local survival loop: breathable and buildable space, water, food, accommodation, reachable work, roads, and the construction material needed to expand or repair. Only then build the extraction or agriculture chain that justifies the outpost. A remote settlement that cannot sustain its own workers will not become a dependable exporter.
Keep the first outpost narrow. If the planet offers a material missing on Kewa, prioritize that chain and the transport needed to move it. Avoid recreating every optional service and advanced factory until the outpost proves its core flow. The Planets and Outposts guide gives a landing-to-export checklist.
Check both ends of transport. The planet needs output storage and a ship path; Kewa needs arrival capacity and a consuming chain. Otherwise the same cargo fills storage on one side and production stops.
Protect the Kewa settlement while looking away
Galaxy play creates divided attention. Before opening another settlement, watch the Kewa city through multiple cycles. Ensure homes remain supplied, essential production has output room, power by-products have destinations, and pollution is stable. A silent failure at home can grow while you solve a minor layout problem on a planet.
Set clear pause conditions. If food, water, Power, or Kewa health crosses your acceptable boundary, stop the outpost expansion and repair the home loop. The goal is two stable economies, not one impressive remote chain supported by a failing capital.
Keep scope and version clear
These pages cover the released Steam base game, AppID 2295060. The separate Demo and Playtest have their own AppIDs and may contain different limits or earlier rules. Before We Leave is a predecessor, not a source of current Beyond These Stars ship or planet mechanics.
The official wiki and developer blogs establish map layers, ship roles, travel Energy, temperature, and the purpose of settleable planets. Exact ship costs, capacities, resource lists, and unlock timing should be checked in the current 1.0 client and rechecked after relevant updates.
