Beyond These Stars Pollution Guide

Stop Beyond These Stars pollution at its source, protect Peep routes, use forests and supplied Cleaners, and recover toxic ground safely.

To control pollution in Beyond These Stars, reduce the active source before expanding cleanup. Preserve nearby forests, use the existing and rate overlays, supply Cleaners with their required inputs, protect the workers and roads needed for recovery, and treat toxic areas as access hazards rather than ordinary dirty tiles.

Identify source, spread, and victim

Open the pollution overlays and locate the Buildings whose working cycles raise the rate. Construction, Power, extraction, refining, food processing, and advanced industry can all contribute, with different severity. Then identify what lies inside or across the affected area: homes, forests, a critical road, a Cleaner, or a producer the settlement cannot pause for long.

Source

The working Building or group adding pollution. Pause optional tasks and stagger heavy producers while cleanup catches up.

Rate

The direction of change. A low reading with a positive rate still needs action before it becomes expensive.

Exposure

The homes, work routes, forests, and services affected. Reroute essentials before residents become unable to support cleanup.

Treatment

Forest absorption, a supplied Cleaner, or the proper toxic-tile tool. Match the response to the current severity.

Pollution hurts Kewa and makes Peeps unhappy or sick. That makes a dirty transport corridor more than a cosmetic issue: it damages the workforce that must keep production and recovery running.

Prevent accumulation around early industry

Forests slowly reduce nearby pollution. Keep useful forest coverage around early polluters when the footprint still allows it. Do not clear every tree for a compact block and then discover that the settlement lacks both atmosphere and passive cleaning.

Spread major sources enough that one Cleaner or forest cluster is not overwhelmed by the entire industrial district. Leave a clean road into the area and room for later Power Lines. The shortest possible hauling route is not efficient if it pushes homes, food delivery, and cleanup workers through worsening ground.

Watch outputs as well as emissions. A Cleaner that lacks Soot or Water cannot respond; a generator whose by-product storage is full may stop producing the Power the Cleaner needs elsewhere. The pollution response is also a resource chain.

Recover a polluted district in order

Step
Action
Success signal
Stop growth
Pause optional high-pollution work and avoid starting another task in the same cluster.
The pollution rate falls toward neutral or negative.
Preserve access
Keep food, homes, Power, storage, and cleanup reachable by a safer road.
Workers continue the essential response without crossing the worst tiles.
Supply treatment
Deliver every required Cleaner input and free its output or task capacity.
Active cleaning reaches the contaminated tiles instead of idling.
Restart gradually
Resume one producer and watch both overlays through a complete cycle.
Useful output returns while pollution remains controlled.

Do not resume everything when the visible color improves once. Existing pollution can fall while the next production wave recreates the same positive rate. A staged restart reveals which Building group exceeds the local forest and Cleaner capacity.

Handle toxic areas as a pathing emergency

Official documentation states that heavily polluted ground can become a Toxic Area after sustained exposure. Peeps will not normally cross toxic tiles, so workplaces inside or behind the area can shut down. Cleanup workers may still need to enter dangerous ground and can become unhappy or sick.

Create or preserve an alternate route before the toxic zone cuts the district in half. Keep recovery workers housed close enough, with food, drink, and health support. Use the Toxic Tile Scraper or later Cleaner capability documented by the current client. Do not send a large unprepared workforce across the affected ground.

After toxicity is removed, continue ordinary pollution control. A cleared tile will degrade again if the source remains active and the rate stays positive.

Keep the cleanup chain from blocking itself

Soot is both a by-product of early Power and smelting and an input used by Cleaners. That relationship can be helpful, but only when storage and delivery connect the two. If the Soot producer is full, it may stop; if the Cleaner has no target or input, Soot may continue accumulating elsewhere.

Allocate storage deliberately and monitor demand. Pause a generator that wastes Power and creates an unmanageable secondary output. Avoid relying on exact community rate ratios unless you have verified them against the current version and Building settings.

Verify the district after recovery

Watch a full work-and-break cycle. Confirm that the pollution rate stays controlled, workers reach their jobs, homes receive needs, Kewa’s condition is no longer declining from the area, and each main output and by-product has a destination. Only then add the next industrial Building.
