Beyond These Stars Housing and Services

Plan Beyond These Stars homes and services around work radius, food delivery, recovery, pollution, roads, and sustainable population growth.

Housing is the center of work and recovery in Beyond These Stars. Every Peep needs an accommodation slot, returns to that home between shifts, and only chooses workplaces within 16 tiles of it. A useful neighborhood therefore combines homes with reachable essential jobs, food and drink delivery, roads, clean air, and services—without turning every available home slot into immediate population pressure.

Expansion rule: prepare provisions, jobs, storage, and recovery capacity before adding or filling new housing. Empty homes are safer than residents whose district cannot support a break cycle.

Choose the home for the district

Huts provide the early accommodation baseline. Later accommodation includes Houses, Schools, Apartments, and Homesteads with different capacity, construction, prerequisite, or production roles. Do not select only by the highest slot count. Ask where those residents will work and whether the neighborhood can deliver to them.

Use several compact residential clusters instead of one remote block. A home group near agriculture and storage supports essential supply; another near construction can staff production while keeping heavy pollution at a safe distance. Overlap the edges so priorities can shift when one workplace pauses.

Keep roads legible and entrances open. Most operating buildings need road access, and crowded footprints can deny movement to important areas. Leave a branch point for later services and one route toward new breathable land.

Supply the break, not just the workforce

Peeps work, then return home together to eat, drink, and relax. Food or water in a distant warehouse is not enough if it never enters the accommodation. Select representative homes at the outer edge of each neighborhood during break and confirm both categories are present.

Home slots

Count actual occupants and future arrivals, not only the building's maximum capacity.

Work coverage

Place essential workplaces within 16 tiles of accommodation and keep the route open.

Home supply

Move food, drink, and later recovery items into homes before the shared break begins.

Environment

Keep housing outside heavy pollution and toxic routes; illness and low recovery erase the value of a short commute.

Better meals and drinks improve recovery, while decorations can speed Happiness restoration. Neither substitutes for basic food, drink, rest, or a safe route.

Add services where breaks can use them

Services and decorations are most valuable when residents can reach them during the limited break window. Group them near several homes instead of attaching one to a distant industrial edge. Early decorations can gain a Happiness adjacency effect when placed in a group of three, but preserve roads and future housing footprints.

The Apothecary produces items that help restore Energy and residents store those items at home. The Memorial Statue supports mourning recovery. Cafes and prepared-food chains can improve provision quality. Each service adds its own inputs, work, power, or logistics, so enable it only when the underlying neighborhood remains stable.

Schools and later accommodation unlock through the technology tree rather than appearing as automatic upgrades to a Hut. Follow the highlighted prerequisites and build according to current demand. Do not demolish occupied basic housing until replacement slots are complete, supplied, and placed near the right jobs.

Keep pollution and industry outside the living core

Burner Generators, smelters, and hazardous production can harm Peeps and Kewa. Place them far enough away that housing avoids the strongest pollution while remaining within the work radius of a dedicated worker cluster. Forests and Cleaners help manage pollution, but prevention is easier than reclaiming a toxic road that blocks access.

If industry must share an edge with housing, watch the pollution overlay and preserve empty tiles for mitigation. Power Lines can carry electricity along roads, removing the need to press a generator directly against later residential services.

Diagnose a struggling neighborhood

Check one layer at a time:

  1. Every resident has an actual home slot and the building is accessible.
  2. Essential workplaces fall within 16 tiles and are not losing every worker to higher-priority jobs.
  3. Food and drink reach the home before break.
  4. Happiness and Energy rise during the break rather than continuing to fall.
  5. Pollution and toxic tiles do not cover homes, services, or routes.
  6. Service buildings have inputs, workers, power where required, and output room.

Pause population growth and optional jobs until one district completes a healthy cycle. Then expand the proven pattern rather than adding one huge block. See Jobs and Work Radius for staffing, Food and Drink for provisions, and Strikes and Sickness for emergency recovery.
