The Beyond These Stars demo is a free opening sample, while the full game is the released 1.0 journey across Kewa, the galaxy, and multiple settlements. Use the demo to test the basic city-building rhythm, presentation, and performance. Buy the full game for Story and Sandbox progression beyond that opening, not because the demo is a separate edition that upgrades in place.
What the demo can answer
The demo is most useful for deciding whether the game’s core perspective works for you. You can learn how roads and buildings fit on Kewa’s curved terrain, how Peeps move resources, how a work shift gives way to a shared break, and how a simple shortage propagates through a production chain. That is enough to judge the pace and interface better than a trailer can.
It is also a practical hardware check. The released Steam page specifies native 64-bit Windows support, an 8 GB minimum memory target, DirectX 11-class minimum graphics, 7 GB of storage, and an SSD recommendation. A demo session can reveal whether text is comfortable at your chosen resolution and whether the camera feels good with your input setup. It cannot guarantee late-game performance, where a larger settlement has more workers, routes, and production tasks.
Treat the demo as a learning environment. A compact home-work layout, a renewable food-and-water loop, sensible storage, and clean road access remain valuable habits in 1.0 even when balance or objective timing differs.
What opens in the full release
The paid game delivers the complete authored journey and the broad systems advertised for 1.0: travel with Kewa, systems and sectors on the galaxy map, encounters, alien objectives, trade, technologies, planets, and off-whale settlements. It also includes Sandbox Mode, whose world setup can alter resources, water, terrain, planets, building availability, and overall challenge.
Demo
A bounded opening for learning the settlement loop and testing whether the game suits your PC and play style.
Full Story
The complete Kewa relationship, galaxy exploration, technology progression, outposts, encounters, and ending path.
Full Sandbox
A configurable new-game route for custom terrain, resources, worlds, unlocks, and difficulty.
Live updates
The released base game received launch hotfixes; advice tied to an older demo build may no longer describe exact behavior.
The crucial difference is scale. Early materials teach a local chain; the full game asks you to maintain that city while Kewa travels, resources are distributed across worlds, and additional settlements take specialized roles. The systems become connected rather than merely larger.
Do demo saves carry over?
Do not plan a purchase around save transfer unless the developer or current Steam client explicitly confirms it. The demo and base game have separate AppIDs, and the available official product information does not promise that a demo save imports into 1.0. Even if files appear on the same computer, copying or renaming them can produce a broken state when objectives, data, or balance have changed.
The safe assumption is that knowledge carries over, while save data may not. Use the demo to rehearse placement and priority decisions instead of polishing a settlement for dozens of hours. When you start the full version, build for its current technology and objective sequence.
If Steam shows both products installed, confirm which library entry is running before reporting a bug. Also verify the build through the game’s current update state: launch Hotfix #1 and Hotfix #2 addressed post-release behavior, whereas screenshots or forum answers from earlier demos can be correct for their build and wrong for yours.
A good demo-to-full transition
Finish the sample only as far as needed to answer your buying questions. Check camera movement, zoom, selection precision, readable UI scale, settlement feedback, and whether you enjoy tracing a stalled resource. Then begin a clean Story save in the full game.
In that new save:
- Rebuild a compact home, water, food, road, and early-material core rather than copying coordinates blindly.
- Follow current objectives because their ordering teaches the released technology tree.
- Inspect building tooltips again; do not rely on remembered demo numbers.
- Keep your first expansion flexible for power, pollution management, and later logistics.
- Reach the galaxy before judging the full scope, since planets and Kewa’s travel decisions are central to the paid experience.
