Beyond These Stars is rated Playable on Steam Deck, not Verified. Valve’s current compatibility record says the Windows build runs successfully on SteamOS and the default graphics configuration performs well, but some actions may need the touchscreen, virtual keyboard, or a community controller layout. Small text and non-Deck button icons are also flagged.
What Playable means for this game
Valve uses Playable for games that work on Deck but need some manual adjustment. The current test record for AppID 2295060 notes that all functionality is accessible, while also warning that the default controller configuration may not reach everything without touchscreen, virtual keyboard, or a community layout. Those statements reflect different test checks: the game can be completed functionally, but not every interaction is seamless on physical controls alone.
The compatibility record also flags occasional mouse, keyboard, or non-Deck controller icons, manual on-screen keyboard invocation for text entry, and small in-game text. These are usability issues rather than a claim that the game fails to launch.
Community ProtonDB reports available at release describe it as running out of the box on Proton 10.0-3, but the sample is small. Valve’s live Deck badge and your current build are stronger evidence than one report.
Start with the default configuration
Install the base game entry for AppID 2295060, not the separate Demo or old Playtest. Leave the compatibility tool at Steam’s default first so the client can apply the current recommended runtime. Launch in Gaming Mode and complete a short new-game test before changing performance or controller settings.
Display
Increase the game's adjustable text size and verify tooltips, resource counts, and technology prerequisites at native Deck resolution.
Pointer
Use a trackpad as mouse with a comfortable click; city placement and dense tooltips benefit from direct pointer control.
Text entry
Invoke the Steam on-screen keyboard manually when a field does not open it for you.
Glyphs
Expect some keyboard, mouse, or other-controller prompts and map them by action rather than matching the displayed icon.
Only force a different Proton version if the current default has a reproducible launch, input, or rendering problem. Record the version that works before experimenting so you can return to it.
Build a city-builder control layout
The store lists a Mouse Only accessibility option, not full controller support. On Deck, a mouse-oriented layout is therefore the dependable base: right trackpad for pointer, a trigger or trackpad press for primary click, another input for secondary click, and sticks or directional controls for camera movement if the game action accepts them.
Map zoom, pause, and escape/menu to easy buttons after checking the live controls. Reserve back grips for frequent keyboard actions only if you use them. A community layout can be a good starting point, but inspect every binding before trusting it; layouts can target an older build or a different personal workflow.
Keep the touchscreen available for one-off UI elements. The goal is reliable access, not forcing every fine placement onto a stick.
Improve readability and stability
Use the game’s adjustable text size, contrast controls, camera comfort options, and custom volume controls. Small text is part of Valve’s Playable warning, so test the most information-dense screens: Technology Tree, building task panels, overlays, and Galaxy Map. Magnification can help with an occasional panel, but a larger in-game text setting is better for regular play.
The Steam page lists an SSD recommendation, 8 GB minimum RAM, and DirectX 11-class minimum hardware for Windows. Deck compatibility testing reports acceptable default performance, but a late settlement is more demanding than the tutorial. If performance drops, reduce graphics settings before lowering UI readability and cap frame rate only after confirming the simulation remains comfortable.
Protect saves and diagnose problems
Steam Cloud is listed for the game, but synchronize fully before switching between Deck and a Windows PC. Keep a manual save before a long session, major travel, or compatibility-tool change. If the game fails after an update, verify files, return to the default Proton selection, and retest without custom launch options.
If input is the only problem, do not change Proton first. Reset or inspect the Steam Input layout, test touchscreen, and open the on-screen keyboard manually. If text is the problem, adjust in-game accessibility before changing render resolution.
For a broader input setup see Controls and Controller Support. For desktop requirements and official PC scope, use System Requirements.
