The major systems in Beyond These Stars turn settlement growth into environmental and progression decisions. Industry creates useful goods and pollution. Terraforming reshapes terrain, water, soil, and forests. The technology tree unlocks new Buildings when earlier ones are constructed and used. These systems should be planned together: the next factory may require Power and a cleanup route, while the next forest may require a complete compost and nursery chain.
Choose the system that matches the symptom
Pollution is the active environmental pressure created by working Buildings. It harms Kewa and can make Peeps unhappy or sick. Terraforming changes the conditions of the land so the settlement can expand, forests can grow, water can reach new areas, and damaged space can recover. Technology progression reveals the Building dependencies needed to perform those jobs.
Pollution control
Use when: contamination rises around industry, homes, or routes.
Primary actions: pause sources, preserve forests, supply Cleaners, protect workers, and treat toxic ground with the proper tool.
Open pollution recoveryTerraforming
Use when: elevation, water, soil, forest coverage, or breathable land blocks a useful district.
Primary actions: define the terrain goal, manage Debris, make Compost, plant forests, and verify the finished condition.
Technology tree
Use when: a required Building remains locked or the settlement lacks the next tool.
Primary actions: select the node, follow its highlighted prerequisite, construct the earlier Building, and complete the required use.
Do not use one system as a vague answer to another. Flattening more land does not remove pollution already present. A newly unlocked Cleaner does not operate without workers and supplies. Building a prerequisite without letting it complete the relevant task may leave the next node locked.
Prevent pollution before cleanup becomes dangerous
Working extraction, refining, Power, and other production Buildings create pollution at different levels. Forests slowly absorb nearby pollution, making preserved tree cover the first defense. Leave space around early industry so natural coverage can help and so later cleanup Buildings have a workable location.
Use both pollution views: the existing amount tells you where damage is now, while the rate tells you whether the district is getting better or worse. A low but positive rate is an early warning. Pause a nonessential polluter, clear full outputs so the intended cleanup can run, or add a properly supplied Cleaner before the area becomes toxic.
Toxic ground changes access. Peeps can refuse to cross it, shutting down workplaces behind the affected tiles, while cleanup workers expose themselves to the hazard. Keep food, water, homes, and the cleanup route outside the contaminated core where possible. The Pollution Guide provides a staged response.
Terraform with a defined end state
Terraforming can raise or lower land, guide water, improve bare ground, and establish new forests. Each action should solve a named constraint: connect water to dry trees, create fertile soil for agriculture, open a breathable expansion edge, or repair a damaged biome. Avoid commissioning a large shape change simply to make the map look regular.
The Landscaper handles terrain work and creates or uses Debris. Compost production gives Wood Waste a useful destination and supports soil improvement. The Tree Nursery supplies Saplings for new forests. These tools form a material and labor chain, so reserve storage and reachable workers before drawing a large project.
Read the technology tree as a dependency map
Every settlement begins with a small set of core Buildings, including the Hut, Potato Patch, Water Pump, and Woodcutter. Other nodes have prerequisites, often another Building that must be constructed and used successfully. Selecting a node highlights incoming and outgoing relationships, including requirements that sit in another category column.
If progress stalls, identify the first incomplete node on the route to the Building you need. Confirm that the prerequisite was built in this settlement, staffed, supplied, powered if required, and able to complete its output. A blocked by-product can prevent the successful task that the technology condition expects.
Prioritize by bottleneck. Choose housing and food when the workforce cannot recover; Power and construction goods when essential chains are blocked; terraforming when the playable biome is shrinking; cleanup when pollution is accelerating; and advanced research only after those foundations remain stable.
Connect progression to resource capacity
An unlock creates an option, not a free Building. Before pursuing it, inspect the construction cost categories, new Power demand, new workers, main inputs, by-products, pollution, and downstream consumer. A technology branch that the settlement cannot sustain can drain the resources needed to repair its present problem.
Complete one working cycle with the new Building and observe the effect on upstream stock. If Wood, ore, Power, food, or labor trends downward without recovery, strengthen that source before scaling the new tier.
Recover a system that has already cascaded
Freeze optional expansion. Restore food, water, housing access, and essential Power so workers can perform repairs. Pause the worst pollution sources. Open routes around contaminated ground. Clear the single output that blocks cleanup or construction. Then restore one district at a time and watch the rate rather than only the current value.
This order prevents a common loop: pollution makes Peeps sick, missing workers stop the Cleaner, the Cleaner stops using Soot, Soot fills a generator or smelter, and Power or construction fails. Solve the workforce and source pressure together instead of duplicating the stopped Buildings.
Evidence and version boundaries
- Official Pollution page, Terraforming page, and Technology tree define the three systems.
- Official Steam description confirms canals, topsoil, forests, production chains, and environmental balance as base-game systems.
- Independent pollution, terraforming, and technology guides were checked for current player failure patterns. Exact timers and costs remain current-client values.
