Kewa is not a decorative map or a vehicle that follows every order. The Peeps live on the back of a sentient Space Whale whose health, happiness, temperature, Energy, memories, and choices shape the journey in Beyond These Stars. Care for Kewa as a living system: protect the biome under the city, keep pollution from becoming toxic, plan travel with room for Kewa’s needs, and treat conversations as part of the relationship rather than flavor text.

Read Kewa’s condition in layers

Kewa’s health begins with the biome. Fertile ground, water, breathable space, forests, and low pollution support the living surface. The developer’s Kewa guidance also connects a healthier biome to Happiness. This means a factory decision, canal project, or cleared forest can affect both settlement output and the companion carrying that settlement.

Happiness is visible through the meter and through consequences. The developer states that health, local temperature, and dialogue choices can influence it. A healthy Kewa travels faster and can remember more of their past through conversations. At very high Happiness, Kewa fruit trees may appear and help nearby Peeps; an unhealthy Kewa can grow Thorny Stems with negative effects.

Travel Energy is a separate concern. Kewa spends Energy while crossing the galaxy and restores it by eating. If necessary, Kewa may choose a route or detour that meets that need. Do not interpret this independence as a pathing failure: the game presents Kewa as a partner with priorities of their own.

Biome health

Improve fertile and breathable land, support forests, manage water, and prevent industrial pollution from degrading the surface.

Happiness

Watch health, temperature, and conversation choices together. The meter reflects a relationship, not one isolated production value.

Travel Energy

Longer movement costs more. Leave enough resilience for a food detour or a change in arrival timing.

Memory and story

Health can open more conversations and affects how the story progresses and concludes. Avoid optimizing from an unverified ending threshold.

Care for the biome beneath the city

Watered forests produce atmosphere and absorb nearby pollution. The official biome material describes fertile land as ground that is watered and dirt, while forests help make surrounding tiles breathable. Preserve natural clusters where they protect homes or industry; a clear tile is not automatically more valuable than a living system that cleans the settlement and expands habitable space.

Terraforming lets you change elevation, guide water, improve soil, and plant new forests. Use it to repair a damaged relationship between city and terrain, not simply to flatten every footprint. Digging can create material that needs storage or reuse, compost and saplings form their own production dependencies, and a half-finished landscape project can block the very route meant to improve it.

Pollution is the fastest way for production to work against Kewa. Compare the existing-pollution overlay with the rate overlay. When the rate remains positive around homes, forests, or key industry, pause optional sources before the area becomes harder to recover. The Pollution guide provides a response order that protects both Kewa and the Peeps.

Plan travel around a willing companion

The Peeps can use the Strange Transmitter to ask Kewa to visit known locations. The request is not absolute control. Kewa may need to eat, cool down, or follow another immediate need first. Prepare the city before a long request: finish critical construction, keep repair resources available, clear blocked outputs, and avoid leaving essential production dependent on a job that requires constant attention.

State
What it changes
Player response
Healthy biome
Supports Happiness, faster travel, and more memory conversations.
Maintain forests, water, fertile ground, and pollution control before departure.
Low travel Energy
Kewa may need to eat in debris fields or asteroid belts.
Allow route slack and keep materials and workers ready for any repair work.
Hot location
A long stay can reduce Kewa's Happiness and may prompt emergency travel toward cooler space.
Treat the stop as time-limited; finish its objective and leave before the city becomes dependent on staying.
New destination
Creates scouting, trade, or settlement opportunities in System View.
Scout before committing settlers and give every outpost a defined resource purpose.

Use conversations as a mechanical choice

Kewa’s conversations reveal memories and let the player respond. The developer explicitly says that hurtful choices can lower Happiness slightly and positive choices can raise it. Read the whole exchange before selecting an answer, and do not treat the relationship as a meter that can always be repaired by planting one more tree.

Health and dialogue reinforce different parts of the same bond. Improving the biome can move Kewa toward more memories; responding with care supports Happiness. If you are pursuing a particular narrative outcome, keep a manual save before major conversations and before the final journey. Exact ending checks are version-sensitive and spoiler-heavy, so this hub does not claim that one dialogue line or a community-reported percentage guarantees an ending.

The practical goal is consistency. A city that cares for Kewa only immediately before a story checkpoint has already accepted slower travel, hostile growth, damaged terrain, and disrupted Peeps along the way. Make Kewa care part of every industrial and travel decision.

Recognize rewards and warnings on the surface

Kewa fruit trees and Thorny Stems communicate the relationship through the playable space. Fruit trees are a positive effect associated with very high Happiness and can help Peeps nearby. Thorny Stems are a warning associated with poor health and impose negative effects. Do not clear or ignore these signs without checking the meter and the surrounding biome.

When a warning appears, trace the broad causes: pollution, toxic areas, lost forest function, poor water coverage, a long hot-system stay, or recent dialogue. Correct the active cause first. Planting while pollution continues to spread, or leaving a hot system while toxic ground remains under the city, solves only one layer.

Coordinate Kewa care with Peep care

Kewa and the Peeps share the same landscape. Forests protect atmosphere and pollution; a cleaner biome supports Kewa; a healthier Kewa can provide positive surface effects; polluted routes make Peeps unhappy or sick. Treat this as a reinforcing loop rather than two competing bars.

Place the dirtiest industry where forests and cleanup can support it without forcing residents through the area. Reserve terraforming capacity before the city runs out of breathable expansion space. When planning an outpost, keep the Kewa settlement stable enough to handle travel decisions without immediate intervention. The Peeps hub and Galaxy guide connect those responsibilities.
